Over the last five hundred years the King Charles spaniel breed of small dogs has proved to be popular companions for royalty, the Aristocracy and many thousands of ordinary devoted owners. There are records of these gentle, delicate and pretty dogs going back to the mid 1500s with mention of Henry VIII allowing these small spaniels to be kept by the ladies of the court. Cavaliers - or the small Toy Spaniels - were the companions for the great aristocratic families and their beloved pets were often included in family portraits by the master portrait painters of the time.
These depictions of high fashion provide historians with an unsurpassed pictorial history of the breed and it was through these pictures that the very popular Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, as it is now known, was established.
